Airbourne - No Guts, No Glory
These Australian rock ’n roll youngsters shook the metal/rock world with their masterpiece Running Wild from 2008. Probably one of the best debut albums that came out for a long time and after non-stop touring all over the world, the wait is over. Finally we have the long awaited second album No Guts, No Glory of these pub-rockers in our hands.
O.K. to give you the news straight away, this album is not as good as Running Wild. Airbourne put themselves in a difficult situation, by raising the bar so high! This is still a good album though, but the raw energy and passion of Running Wild disappeared a little. It took AC/DC around 15/20 years to go from fast, energetic rock albums as Let There Be Rock and Powerage, to more slick sounding albums as Blow Up Your Video. Airbourne did this in just two albums! Is that a bad thing? Hell no, this is still adrenalin pumping rock ‘n roll, that simply makes you want to bang your head, drink loads of beer and pump up your fists in the air!
Overall this album is a way more mid-tempo rock ‘n roll album, with the occasional fast rocker. In these faster songs Airbourne is still a highly flammable, mean rock ‘n roll machine. Songs like ‘Raise The Flag’ and ‘It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over’ give me goose bumps all over and just make me air-guitar and bang my head off in front of my computer. Of course this album contains also a couple of brilliant rock ‘n roll sing-a-long songs. You just have to hear the lyrical line once and you can shout along. Some of these sing-a-long diamonds are ‘Blonde, Bad and Beautiful’ or ‘Steel Town’. In fact, the song ‘Steel Town’ is an ode to the fans in English cities like Sheffield, which are cities with a large steel-industry. Apparently these crowds are the wildest they ever played for.
A lot of people say that Airbourne is just a younger copy of AC/DC. They are totally right. I mean, the band memberes themselves say that they don’t want to re-invent the rock ‘n roll wheel, but just play the music they like best! And at this point there is no other band in the world, that has the craftsmanship to make this kind of rock ‘n roll, that is indeed heavily influenced by Rose Tattoo and AC/DC. Those bands will retire any day now and Airbourne is here to claim the rock ‘n roll throne!
There is a saying, that rock ‘n roll is the devil's music… Well, in that case Airbourne are the sons of Satan!
